Plottings: Your Garden Now

Gardening without water

Do you dream of relaxing in your garden rather than working in it all the time? Why not plant a Mediterranean-style garden so that next year you can rest the hose and cans, relax and enjoy.

You will need well-drained soil and sunshine for this to work well. You could add grit sand to improve drainage if your soil is too heavy.

Great plants for a drought tolerant garden include: Buddleja, Agastache, Achillea, Catananche, Echinacea, Germander, Lavender, Sage/Salvias, Thyme, Oregano (fabulous tall Herrenhausen, or lovely low-growing varieties Kent Beauty or Bristol Cross), Penstemons, Nepeta (Catmint), Aster frikartii Monch, Diascias, Dahlias, Scabious, Santolina, Sedums, Poppies (Californian, Field, Welsh and Oriental), Artemisia, Phlomis, Veronica.

There are also some beautiful grasses which will tolerate hot dry conditions, including customer favourite Stipa tenuissima plus several of the Carex family, Miscanthus, Festuca, Poa, Elymus magellanicus, Calamagrostis and Eragrostis.
